About Communities Advancing the Arts
Communities Advancing the Arts (CAA) is an initiative of The James Irvine Foundation. It focuses on increasing individual giving to the arts, in partnership with California community foundations. The initiative began in December 2004 with $4.75 million in grants awarded to 13 community foundations in the state. Between 2004 and 2007, the community foundations raised more than $59 million for the arts and distributed over $7.8 million in new grants to arts organizations and artists.
Building on these successes, Irvine has committed an additional $3.75 million to a second phase of CAA, beginning March 2008 and concluding March 2011. The second phase includes an Irvine-funded regranting program for the arts and direct grants to each community foundation to support donor engagement.
Participating community foundations aim to attract substantial new and permanent assets for the arts; increase giving to the arts (both discretionary and donor-advised); and demonstrate leadership in the arts sector. Participants are:
California Community Foundation
Community Foundation for Monterey County
Orange County Community Foundation
Sacramento Region Community Foundation
Community Foundation Sonoma County
Ventura County Community Foundation
Technical assistance is a primary component of this initiative. The participating foundations focus on learning what’s working — and what’s not — in various sites, exchanging tools, and making a strong case for increased giving to the arts. Williams Group is the lead provider of technical assistance.
